  China debates 'family values'

Most Chinese agree the family is undergoing tremendous change. But views on what that means run the gamut. Some feel society is headed for serious disorder due to a loss of values like sacrifice, family loyalty, and fidelity. Others see a better China emerging after a period of shakeout, with greater choice and maturity.

At one level, the fight is between traditionalists and progressives. Many of the former feel that an avaricious new money culture will corrupt China and send it into uncharted waters. They see women becoming sex objects and couples devaluing each other. They see the years from 1950 to 1980 as a stable period of happiness, when moral values were predominant and families found meaning in serving the state.

"The opening up of the 1980s is only now showing itself in the way wives and husbands are chosen," says Xia Xueluan, a professor at Beijing University. "Now, when a girl meets a boy the first question is, 'Do you have a house? Do you have a car?' This causes great strains in marriages, and on husbands, to produce income. I'm worried."

Progressives feel that few Chinese want to lose recent gains like choice. Both sexes are more liberated, they feel. In the past, marriage was limited by family background. Divorce was not allowed, often not even in abusive, dead-end situations.

"In the past, there was no money and people were forced to rely on others. The choice for a better life was simple: struggle for food and shelter," says Dong Zhiying with the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. "We all lived together and ate at the same table; we had 'salty or sweet' depending on what was available. Now you can order your own dishes."

Many in China do feel problems with the money culture are underestimated, but don't want a return to state dictates in their private lives. They feel that an obsession with grades, colleges, and jobs has led parents to ignore a traditional emphasis on good behavior, modesty, and politeness. They are troubled by studies showing rising levels of early teen sex and recent cases of teens involved in homicides. They want a form of new moral education that teaches a humane social contract.

China is a great country with the largest population in the world. In order to solve the population problem, our government decides to implemented one-child policy.

When it is carried out for some time, many people not only see its advantages but also disadvantages. Thus, people argue that two-child policy should be put into effect. In my opinion, two-child policy should be carried out.

How To Alleviate China’s Traffic Congestion

As our economy grows at a fever pitch, and more and more people are moving into the major cities and industrial centers, traffic congestion becomes the order of the day.

Traffic congestion not only creates headaches for commuters, but also reduces productivity by taking away valuable time from work. This sickness that plagues our cities must be at least put under control, if not cured. Some people advocate that more roads be built to accommodate the increase in traffic, others think that enlarging the capacity of public transit systems: buses, subway, trains…is the answer.

Building more roads would mean a lot of land will be appropriated—not a very good prospect for economic, agricultural, and environmental reasons. On the other hand, forcing everyone to take public transit will bring inconvenience to those whose use of their cars is essential to their work. Putting more buses on the road may have the opposite effect as big buses tend to clog up narrow streets. Building an extensive subway system can be the ideal answer, but that is very expensive.

Clearly, we cannot go for one single solution. A compromise must be struck between the different solutions. My personal view is that for cities that have plenty of unused land, more roads should be built. Having special lanes reserved for bicycles and motorcycles should encourage more people to use bicycles and motorcycles instead of cars. As a long-term solution, extensive subway, or surface monorail systems should be built for all the major cities

The Spring Festival Far and away the most important holiday in China is Spring Festival, also known as the Chinese New Year. To the Chinese people it is as important as Christmas to people in the West. The dates for this annual celebration are determined by the lunar calendar rather than the Gregorian calendar, so the timing of the holiday varies from late January to early February. To the ordinary Chinese, the festival actually begins on the eve of the lunar New Year's Day and ends on the fifth day of the first month of the lunar calendar. But the 15th of the first month, which normally is called the Lantern Festival, means the official end of the Spring Festival in many parts of the country. 2 Spring Festival is the most importantand popular festival in China. Before Spring Festival ,the people usually clean and decorate their houses. And they go to the Flower Fairs to buy some flowers.During Spring Festival ,the adults usually give lucky money to children.People often get together and have a big meal. Some people eat dumpling for dinner.

The hair style of high school students has been a controversial issue for many years. The prescribed plain short hair may look tidy, but the insistence on the hair length below the ear lobe in the case of girl students, which is fixed at one centimeter or at most two, is quite unnecessary. Until recently, the Mayor of Tainan had tried to persuade the Ministry of Education to give the high schoolers the carte blanche to determine their own hair styles. It is difficult for us to say if the idea is right or wrong. So far as I am concerned, problems of the young are not confined to such a small matter as hair style; what matters is the reinforcement of the students' moral consciousness, the way they should behave, and the like. The length of their hair or whether they have the right to give it a permanent wave is relatively unimportant. Cleanness and neatness is what really matters. There is hardly anything that stays unchanged all the time. Why doesn't the concerned authority reconsider this hair business? Maybe the bickerings that sour the relations between the military instructors and their students will therefore be gone. By the way, to improve one's appearance is nothing wrong, is it? We all expect to see a new look of the young. Maybe a change in the concerned authority's policy toward the high schoolers' hair style will bring this about.

Each nation has its own characteristic festivals that

reflect the culture of itself. In China, asour country and

westerncountries become increasingly closer, more and more chinese accept western culture.

However, some western festivals sometimes even more popular than traditional festivals, foreign cultural’s influence should not be underestimated. The main The main group of celebratingwesternfestivals is youth group which takes students as the main force.People celebrate festivals such as Valentine's day, mother's day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. In fact, because of the Chinese way of thinking, western holidays in China is just popular for Christmas and Valentine's day, not all western holidays attract people's attention. According to a survey ofCentral China Normal University, many college students know the existence of western festivals, but little of them know about their cultural connotations. In addition to Christmas, respondents who knowother western festivals’meaning are less than 10%. Referring to the way to celebrating, in General, during the Festival, people send gifts such as flowers and greeting cards. They sing with friends, and

blessor send messages to each other;lots of people are going to relax during the festival:shopping, inviting friends to restaurants, dancing, and so on. On the whole, Chinese celebrate western holidays with the following

faith four anda characteristics: passion for universality, particularity, blind

  consumption

As the saying goes,1000 readers have 1000 Hamlets in mind. people have different viewson whether Chinese should celebrate western holidays. Some people who are keen on Western festivals, argued that China's traditional festivals are too rigidand there are many festivals with feudal thinking. On the contrary, westernfestivalswhich

flamboyantand reflect are excitingadvocate In the freedom. addition, westernholidaysmake people who’re under heavy social pressure have a chance to relax. At the same time, some experts believe that the celebration of Western holidays are an inevitable trend of cultural exchanges. Huang Kemin, aSociologistbelieves that celebrating western holidays is aform of cultural communication. In some cases, it’ll fill vacancies inChinese culture. Some students believe that celebratingWestern festivals can enhance the friendship ofclassmates and make the classes more solidarity.Duringa

festival, Most of the supermarkets and restaurants provide promotions that benefitconsumers, these festivals also has a catalytic role to economic development.

Opponents believe thatChina has its own history and local culture for thousands of years, the Western Festival don’t suit China's needs for cultural development. Also, due to blind worship, people often losttraditional culture. Celebratingwestern holidayswill shake the traditional culture’sstatus in the minds of nationals and endanger the inheritance and development of traditional culture. For example, many young people celebrate Valentine's day, but they don't knowChinese Lovers’s Day. In addition, owing to the cultural invasion, many countries arewary of foreign holidays .To guarantee Chinese cultural’s independence, western holidays cann’t be allowed to develop freely. At the same time, many people celebrate Western festivals for following the fashion .The effectof cultural exchanges isn’t obvious. In addition, the blind pursuit of consumption and enjoyment causesmoney worship, hedonism and other bad ideas.

Just my personal opinion, we should celebrate western holidays withrational thought, and we shouldn’t lose

ourselves.Towards western Festivals, we should take its essence and discard the dregs. For instance,ThanksgivingDaycan be advocated for making our culture advance as it reflects one of Chinese traditional virtues- gratefulness; others, such as Halloween, should be treated calmly because it’s religious.

Cultural integration is the trend of the historical

development. So we should not implement "isolationism". Under the premise of enhancing awareness of traditional culture and revitalizing Chinese culture, we can activelyenter the world that has frequent cultural exchanges.

Festivalsare important means of cultural transmission which host the important cultural. They’re the crystallization of human wisdom. Rich festival lights up our lives, for our life has various colors. Let us take the broad mindand appreciate the colorful festivals!
