“would rather+動(dòng)詞原形”是英語(yǔ)中常見的一個(gè)慣用句式（美國(guó)英語(yǔ)中多用had rather）。 ’d rather為would（或had）rather的縮寫形式。would (had)在此決無(wú)“過去”之意，且無(wú)詞性、時(shí)態(tài)變化，它是一個(gè)情態(tài)助動(dòng)詞。該句式常用來(lái)表示選擇的意愿，意謂“寧可……”、“寧愿……”、“最好……”。例如：

(1) He’d rather work in the countryside.

她寧可到農(nóng)村去工作。

(2) If you’d rather be alone, we’ll all leave here.

如果你寧愿獨(dú)自呆著，那我們都離開這兒。

1. than 后邊也應(yīng)接動(dòng)詞原形（見句（4）和（5）），但如該句型前后連接的兩個(gè)動(dòng)詞相同，則than之后的那個(gè)動(dòng)詞可省去。如：

2. would rather...than...也可改寫成 “would...rather than...”,其用法及含義仍不變。如：

3. 有時(shí)，為表示語(yǔ)氣上的強(qiáng)調(diào)，可將rather than置于句首，如：

4. would rather后也可跟從句，表示主語(yǔ)寧愿讓某人干某事。這時(shí)，從句謂語(yǔ)動(dòng)詞要用虛擬語(yǔ)氣，即用一般過去時(shí)表示過去現(xiàn)在或?qū)��?lái)要做的事；用過去完成時(shí)表示過去要做的事。如：
