高一新教材Unit 4 Earthquakes reading教案 [ 2009-10-27 17:39:00 | By: chenshujing ] Unit 4 Earthquakes Reading I. Teaching Aims: 1. Knowledge aims: get the students to learn the following useful new words and expressions in this passage; get the students to know basic knowledge about natural disasters. 2. Ability aims: develop the students’ reading ability and let them learn different reading skills. 3. Emotional aims: get the students t know damages earthquakes bring about and the ways to reduce losses of earthquakes; get the students to know how to protect oneself and help others in earthquakes; get the students to be aware of a terrible disaster, meanwhile get them to face it, treat it in a proper way, and never get discouraged. II. Teaching important points: 1. Improve the students’ reading ability by reading the material. 2. Get the students to learn different reading skills. III. Teaching Difficult Points: How to improve the students’ reading ability. IV. Teaching Methods: 1. Task-based teaching and learning. 2. Cooperative learning: pair work or group work to get every student to take part in the teaching-and learning activities. 3. Discussion method to make the Ss understand what they’ve learned in class. V. Teaching Aids: The multimedia and other normal teaching tools. Ⅵ. Teaching Procedures: Step 1. Greetings Greet the whole class as usual. Step 2. Warming Up Purpose: To arouse Ss’ interest in learning about Tangshan earthquake. Show some pictures about earthquakes and ask them: 1.Can you guess what happened in the pictures? (A powerful 8.0-magnitude earthquake struck Sichuan province on May 12, 2008. More than 60,000 people died.) 2. Do you know any famous earthquake that happened in our country? (Hebei Tangshan earthquake) 3.Can you tell us what might be happen in an earthquake? (The buildings will fall down; the roads will be destroyed; many people will be killed or injured; The army will be sent to rescue the people) Step 3. Pre-reading Discussion: Do you think earthquake is predictable? What do you think will happen before an earthquake? (Bright light flash in the sky; The well has deep cracks in it, and the water in it rises and falls; Chickens are flying and dogs are barking, and pigs and cows are too nervous to eat; Fish jump out of the ponds, and mice run wildly out of the fields.) Step 4. Reading 1. Fast reading Purpose: To get a brief understanding of the text. (1) Ask the students to reading the passage quickly and find the topic sentences of each paragraph. Paragraph1:Strange things were happening in the countryside in the northeast Hebei. Paragraph2: Everything began to shake and it seemed as if the world was at an end. paragraph3: Everywhere they looked nearly everything was destroyed. Paragraph4: All hope was not lost. Reading skills:we can find the main idea of each paragraph in the first or the last sentence. (2) Q: What does the passage mainly talk about? (Something that happened before the earthquake, during the earthquake and after the earthquake.) 2. Careful reading Purpose: To get Ss to have some details in the text. (1) Read the passage carefully and find more information about it. Part1 (para1): ⑴Water in wells _rises__ and falls; ⑵Smelly_ gas comes out of wells; ⑶Animals are _nervous__: ①Chickens and pigs_ too nervous to eat_. ②Mice_ ran out of filed_. ③Fish _jump out of the ponds There’re bright _lights_ in the sky. Loud _sound_ can be heard. Part 2 (para2-3): Details Para 2-3 1. At _3:42____ am, the __greatest_ earthquake of the 20th century began . 2. _Steam__ burst from holes in the ground. 3. Hard hills of the rock became rivers of _dirt___. 4. Bricks_ covered the ground like red autumn leaves. 5. Two _dams_ and most of the bridges fell. 6. Part 3 (para4): Q:How did the army help to rescue the survivors? Step5 Post-reading Discussion: (group work) ⑴ What shall we do if an earthquake happens? ⑵ Show some pictures to tell the students what they should (shouldn’t) do if an earthquake happens? Don’ts ①. Don’t be nervous. ②. Don’t jump out of the tall building. ③. Don’t be close to the tall building. Dos ①Keep calm. ②.Protect your head by putting your bag on your head. ③.Hide under the table or bed , if you haven’t time to escape. ④.If you stay in the open air, go to the fields without trees. Step6 Summary ⑴ New words ⑵ Useful tips.
