It was a typical Mahayana temple for the royal family. The Da Cien temple was destroyed in a war at the end of the Tang Dynasty. Only the pagoda was left intact. As the symbol of the old-line Xian, Big Wild Goose Pagoda is a well-preserved ancient building and a holy place for Buddhists. It is located in the southern suburb of Xian City, about 4 kilometers (2.49 miles) from the downtown of the city. Standing in the Da Cien Temple complex, it attracts numerous visitors for its fame in the Buddhist religion, its simple but appealing style of construction, and its new square in front of the temple. It is rated as a National Key Cultural Relic Preserve as well as an AAAA Tourist Attraction.
This attraction can be divided into three parts: the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, the Da Cien Temple, and the North Square of Big Wild Goose Pagoda.
Big Wild Goose PagodaOriginally built in 652 during the reign of Emperor Gaozong of the Tang Dynasty (618-907),it functioned to collect Buddhist materials that were taken from India by the hierarch Xuanzang.
Xuanzang started off from Changan (the ancient Xian),along the Silk Road and through deserts, finally arriving in India, the cradle of Buddhism. Enduring 17 years and traversing 100 countries, he obtained Buddha figures, 657 kinds of sutras, and several Buddha relics. Having gotten the permission of Emperor Gaozong (628-683),Xuanzang, as the first abbot of Da Cien Temple, supervised the building of a pagoda inside it. With the support of royalty, he asked 50 hierarchs into the temple to translate Sanskrit in sutras into Chinese, totaling 1,335 volumes, which heralded a new era in the history of translation. Based on the journey to India, he also wrote a book entitled Pilgrimage to the West in the Tang Dynasty, to which scholars attached great importance.
First built to a height of 60 meters (197 feet) with five stories, it is now 64.5 meters (211.6 feet) high with an additional two stories. It was said that after that addition came the saying-Saving a life exceeds building a seven-storied pagoda. Externally it looks like a square cone, simple but grand and it is a masterpiece of Buddhist construction. Built of brick, its structure is very firm. Inside the pagoda, stairs twist up so that visitors can climb and overlook the panorama of Xian City from the arch-shaped doors on four sides of each storey. On the walls are engraved fine statues of Buddha by the renowned artist Yan Liben of the Tang Dynasty. Steles by noted calligraphers also grace the pagoda.
As for the reason why it is called Big Wild Goose Pagoda, there is a legend. According to ancient stories of Buddhists, there were two branches, for one of which eating meat was not a taboo. One day, they couldnt find meat to buy. Upon seeing a group of big wild geese flying by, a monk said to himself: Today we have no meat. I hope the merciful Bodhisattva will give us some. At that very moment, the leading wild goose broke its wings and fell to the ground. All the monks were startled and believed that Bodhisattva showed his spirit to order them to be more pious. They established a pagoda where the wild goose fell and stopped eating meat. Hence it got the name Big Wild Goose Pagoda.
Da Cien Temple
Da Cien Temple is the home of Big Wild Goose Pagoda. In 648, to commemorate the dead virtuous queen, royalty ordered the building of a temple named Cien (Mercy and Kindness),for which the status and scale far exceeded all others. Today, with an area of 32,314 square meters (38,648.5 square yards),one seventh of the original area, it still retains its grandeur.
Before the temple, there stands a statue of hierarch Xuanzang, the meritorious hierarch. Walking on and across a small bridge, visitors will see the gates of the temple. With guarding lions, the temple seems stately for lions were said to function as talismans.
Entering the temple you will see two buildings-Bell Tower in the east and Drum Tower in the west. Inside the Bell Tower hangs an iron bell 15 tons (14.76 gross tons) in weight. It was molded in 1548 in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). Along the central axis are arranged the Hall of Mahavira, Sermon Hall, Big Wild Goose Pagoda, and the Hall of Xuanzang Sanzang. In the Hall of Mahavira are three carved statues of Sakyamuni, and 18 arhats as well as Xuanzang. The Sermon Hall is where Buddhist disciples would listen to a sermon. A bronze statue of Amitabha is dedicated and a Buddha statue is collected by Xuanzang as oblation. The Hall of Xuanzang Sanzang is north of Big Wild Goose Pagoda. In this hall are Xuanzangs relic and a bronze statue of a seated Xuanzang. The inner wall is chiseled with murals depicting this hierarchs story. Renowned as the contemporary Dunhuang Buddhist storehouse praised by UNESCO, it is the biggest memorial of Xuanzang.
North Square of Big Wild Goose Pagoda
Surrounding Big Wild Goose Pagoda, the scenery is also quite charming, especially the square north of the Da Cien Temple. Covering about 110,000 square meters (131563 square yards) plus 20,000 square meters (23920.6 square yards) of water area, it holds many records: in Asia, it is the biggest Tang-culture square, the biggest fountain and waterscape square, and the largest-scale sculptures area. In the world, it has the most benches, the longest light-belt, and the largest-scale acoustic complex.

The Big Wild Goose Pagoda was built at a height of 60 meters, with 5 floors, a brick and soil core, and a circular staircase. The brick joints in the back tower are overgrown with vegetation, gradually becoming decadent. After several renovations during the Changan period of Empress Wu Zetian, the Tianbao period of Emperor Xuanzong of Tang, and the Changxing period of Later Tang, the Big Wild Goose Pagoda grew 4.5 meters taller than before and added two layers. The bottom layer has a side length of 25 meters each, and the base is square with a side length of 45 to 48 meters. There are ticket doors on all four sides of each layer, and stairs are installed inside the tower. There are exquisite line carved Buddha statues on the lintel at the bottom of the tower, especially the Shakyamuni Buddha preaching picture on the west lintel, which is engraved with a photo of the abandoned palace building at that time. The brick niches on both sides of the Tanan Gate are embedded with the stele of "Preface to the Holy Teachings of the Three Treasures of the Great Tang Dynasty" written by Emperor Taizong Li Shimin and the stele of "Preface to the Holy Teachings of the Three Treasures of the Great Tang Dynasty" written by Emperor Gaozong Li Zhi. Tourist friends:
Hello everyone!
Welcome everyone to Xian Big Wild Goose Pagoda for sightseeing and tourism!
The Big Wild Goose Pagoda is located in the Dacien Temple in the southern suburbs and is a famous ancient building in China, regarded as a symbol of the ancient capital Xian. It is said that Tang Monk came back from India (ancient India) to specialize in translating and storing scriptures. It is named Wild Goose Pagoda because it was built in the style of the Indian Wild Goose Pagoda. Due to the later construction of a smaller Wild Goose Pagoda in Jianfu Temple in Changan, in order to distinguish them, people called Cien Temple Pagoda the Big Wild Goose Pagoda and Jianfu Temple Pagoda the Small Wild Goose Pagoda, which have been passed down to this day. The Big Wild Goose Pagoda has a square plan and is built on a platform that is about 45 meters square and 5 meters high. The tower has seven floors, with a bottom side length of 25 meters and a height of 64 meters from the ground to the top of the tower. The tower body is made of bricks, and the joints between the ground bricks are exceptionally strong. There are stairs inside the tower that can spiral up. Each floor has an arched doorway on all four sides, which allows for a distant view from the railing. The scenery of Changan can be seen at a glance. The bottom of the tower has stone gates on all four sides, and there are exquisite line carved Buddha statues on the masts, which are said to be the works of Yan Liben, a great painter of the Tang Dynasty. On both sides of the south gate of the tower, there are two stone tablets embedded in the brick niches, "Preface to the Holy Teachings of the Three Treasures of the Tang Dynasty" and "Preface to the Holy Teachings of the Three Treasures", written by Chu Suiliang, one of the four great calligraphers of the early Tang Dynasty. After the end of the Tang Dynasty, there were frequent wars and fires in temples, and the halls were burned down. Only the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda stood tall and alone.
Another theory is that the Big Wild Goose Pagoda was built in the third year of the Yonghui reign of Emperor Gaozong of Tang Dynasty. It is also known as the Cien Temple Pagoda because it is located inside the Cien Temple. Cien Temple was built by Crown Prince Li Zhi in the 22nd year of the Tang Dynastys Zhenguan reign (648 AD) to commemorate his mother, Empress Wende. When the Big Wild Goose Pagoda was first built, it had only five floors. It was renovated during the reign of Empress Wu Zetian and later underwent multiple repairs. The current tower has seven floors, a total of 64 meters, and is shaped like a square pyramid. The tower body is made of green bricks, and each layer of the walls is constructed with imitation wooden structures such as columns and railings. There are archways built on all four sides of each floor. This pavilion style brick tower, with a simple shape and majestic momentum, is a masterpiece of Buddhist architectural art in China. On both sides of the south gate at the bottom of the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, there are two stone tablets inscribed by the famous Tang Dynasty calligrapher Chu Suiliang. One piece is the "Preface to the Holy Teachings of the Three Treasures of the Great Tang Dynasty"; The other piece is the "Preface to the Holy Teachings of the Three Treasures of the Great Tang Dynasty" written by Emperor Gaozong of Tang Dynasty. The side of the monument is adorned with intricate grass patterns, which are beautiful and vividly shaped. These are important cultural relics for studying Tang Dynasty calligraphy, painting, and sculpture art. Dacien Temple is the most famous and magnificent Buddhist temple in Changan City during the Tang Dynasty. It was built by imperial decree of the Tang Dynasty.
Tang Sanzang - Xuanzang, once presided over temple affairs here, led the translation of Buddhist scriptures, and founded a Buddhist sect. He personally supervised the construction of the Big Wild Goose Pagoda in the temple. So Dacien Temple has a very prominent position in the history of Chinese Buddhism and has always been highly valued both domestically and internationally.
Inside the temple gate, the bell and drum tower face each other from east to west. The bell and drum are the commands of the temple, and there is a saying of "morning bell and evening drum". A Ming Dynasty iron bell weighing 30000 pounds and over three meters high is suspended inside the east bell tower. During the Tang Dynasty, students who passed the imperial examination and became successful candidates went to the Cien Pagoda to inscribe their names, which was called the "Yan Pagoda Inscription". Later, it was adopted as a tradition. Tang Dynasty painters Wu Daozi, Wang Wei, and others once painted many murals for Cien Temple, but unfortunately they have long been lost. But on the stone lintels and door frames of the four entrances under the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, there are exquisite Tang Dynasty line carvings preserved. The line carved palace painting on the lintel of Xishi Gate is particularly precious.
To the southeast of the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, there is a group of monk tombs and pagodas. Six of them were built during the Qing Dynasty. The the Shakya ManiHall is the central building of the temple. There are three body Buddhas, Bodhisattvas and clay statues of Arhat in the hall. It is a place for worshipping Buddha and reciting scriptures. The Dharma Hall is a place for preaching and preaching. There is a bronze statue of Amitabha Buddha in the hall.
The Cisi Temple today is the largest since the Ming Dynasty, while the halls inside the temple were built in the late Qing Dynasty. Now that the Big Wild Goose Pagoda has been restored, the ancient pagoda is magnificent, the temple halls are filled with incense, and the courtyards are filled with flowers, making it a particularly attractive tourist destination for both domestic and foreign visitors
Ladies and gentlemen, thats all for todays trip. You can bring your family and friends back here to have a great time. Looking forward to seeing you again next time.

Dear tourists:
Hello everyone!
Today we are visiting the Big Wild Goose Pagoda Scenic Area and Qujiang Tourist Area. First, we will visit the world-famous Big Wild Goose Pagoda.
The Big Wild Goose Pagoda is located in the Dacien Temple at the southern end of Yanta Road. The Dacien Temple, originally named Wuliu Temple, was first built in the Sui Dynasty in 589 AD. In 648 AD, Crown Prince Li Zhi requested to choose a place where he would "bring forests and springs, and strive for excellence in appearance" to build a Buddhist temple and pray for blessings for his mother. Therefore, the Sui Dynasty Wuliu Temple was rebuilt and renamed Dacien Temple. The Da Cien Temple in the Tang Dynasty was extremely large, covering an area of 342 acres, with 1897 rooms, and could accommodate more than 3000 monks and disciples. The first abbot of the Cien Temple was Master Xuanzang, known as the "leader of the Dharma Sect and the backbone of the nation". Xuanzang, surnamed Chen and named Yi, was from Yanshi, Henan. He was a famous Buddhist translator, traveler, and writer in ancient China. In 620xx AD, at the age of 28, he went to India alone to study Buddhism. He had been engaged in Buddhist studies in various parts of India for 20xx years. In 645 AD, Xuanzang returned from his journey to the west to collect Buddhist scriptures, and brought back 657 volumes of Buddhist scriptures, a large number of Buddhist relics and Buddhist statues, which were warmly welcomed by the government and countrymen. In December 648 AD, when the Great Cien Temple was initially built and completed, Master Xuanzang was invited to serve as the abbot of Cien Temple to continue translating Buddhist scriptures, and preaching the doctrine of Vijnaism here, making Cien Temple the ancestor of Vijnaism. The current Dacien Temple was rebuilt on the site of the western courtyard of Dacien Temple in the Tang Dynasty, with a scale only one seventh of that in the Tang Dynasty. It has now become a national key cultural relic protection unit and a national 5A level tourist attraction.
Alright, now we have arrived at the entrance of Da Cien Temple. As most Buddhist temples in China are built in deep mountains and forests, the main entrance of the temple is called the Mountain Gate, also known as the Three Gates. The East Gate is the Wuxiang Gate, the West Gate is the Wuzuo Men, and the Middle Gate is the Empty Gate, symbolizing the three liberation of Buddhism. Walking into the Mountain Gate, we can see the second floor of the bell and drum facing east and west. Inside the bell tower on the east side, there is a Ming Dynasty iron bell hanging, weighing about 30000 pounds, with the four characters "Yan Ta Morning Bell" engraved on it; There is a large drum with a diameter of about 2 meters inside the Drum Tower on the west side. Monks ring the bell in the morning, beat the drum at night, and play the morning bell and evening drum, shining together. The bell of the temple rings 108 times a day, symbolizing the elimination of ones 108 afflictions, and "hearing the bell clears ones afflictions. Wisdom grows, Bodhi is born. Leaving hell, out of the pit of fire. May one become a Buddha and overcome all sentient beings." That is to say, hearing the bell of the temple can eliminate all afflictions, attain enlightenment, and become a Buddha.
To the north of the Bell and Drum Tower is the the Shakya ManiHall, which is the main building of the Buddhist temple. Inside the Hall are three body Buddhas. In the middle is the Dharma Buddha Piluchana Buddha, in the west is the Bodhisattva Buddha, and in the east is the Yingshen Buddha Sakyamuni Buddha. On both sides of the Three Body Buddha are the two great disciples of the Buddha, with Gaya to the east and Ananda to the west. There are statues of Samantabhadra Bodhisattva and Manjusri Bodhisattva on both sides, symbolizing truth and wisdom respectively. Eighteen statues of Arhat are also listed on the east and west sides.
The the Shakya ManiHall used to be the Dharma Hall, where Buddhist scriptures were preached for Buddhists. Inside the Hall, there were three rubbings pasted on the wall. In the middle was a picture of Xuanzangs collection. On both sides were two disciples of Xuanzang, Yuance and Kuiji. Yuance was the grandson of Silla, and Kuiji was the nephew of Yuchi Gong, a famous general in the early Tang Dynasty. Both of the two famous disciples followed Xuanzang as their teachers. It can be seen that Xuanzang was famous and had a high status at that time.
Behind the Dharma Hall is the world-famous Big Wild Goose Pagoda. The Big Wild Goose Pagoda was first built in the third year of Yonghui reign of Emperor Gaozong of Tang Dynasty, in 652 AD. It was designed and supervised by Xuanzang himself to preserve the Buddhist scriptures and statues he brought back from India. The original tower had 5 floors and was made of brick, soil, and soil, making it difficult to climb. Later, during the reign of Empress Wu Zetian, it was rebuilt and raised to 10 floors. After being destroyed by war, it was rebuilt again in the Five Dynasties and changed to 7 floors. The current Big Wild Goose Pagoda basically retains its appearance after this renovation, which is a tower style brick tower with a height of 64.7 meters and seven floors. There are stairs inside the tower that can spiral up, and each floor has a brick arch. In the brick niches on the east and west sides of the south gate of the tower, there are two stone tablets embedded, which are the "Preface to the Three Treasures of the Great Tang Dynasty" and "Preface to the Three Treasures of the Great Tang Dynasty" written by Li Shimin and Li Zhi respectively. Both tablets were written by the famous calligrapher Chu Suiliang in the early Tang Dynasty and are known as the "Two Saints and Three Treasures Steles".

Dear tourists:
Welcome everyone here, below I will introduce it to you!
In the northwest of China, the beautiful city of Xian is a famous ancient capital of thirteen dynasties. There are iconic buildings such as the Bell Tower, the Ming Great Wall ruins, and the Huaqing Pool. The most magnificent and famous one is undoubtedly the Big Wild Goose Pagoda.
The Big Wild Goose Pagoda has been built by Master Xuanzang since the Tang Dynasty to store Buddhist scriptures. It is built inside the Dacien Temple and has been well preserved since ancient times. It is now available for tourists to visit and explore, and is a famous tourist attraction in China, as well as a symbol of the famous ancient city of Xian. The Big Wild Goose Pagoda is printed in the center of the emblem of Xian, indicating that it is undoubtedly the symbol of Xian.
The origin of the Wild Goose Pagoda is magical and mysterious. According to legend, in the state of Magadha in India, a monk in a temple believed in Hinayana Buddhism and ate the Three Pure Foods (i.e. goose, deer, and calf meat). One day, a flock of geese flew into the sky. A monk saw a flock of geese and casually said, "Everyone has nothing to eat today. Bodhisattva should know that we are hungry!" Before he could finish speaking, a goose fell and died in front of the monk. He was both shocked and delighted, and spread the message to all the monks in the temple, believing that the Buddha was educating them. So, at the place where the geese fell, a grand ceremony was held to bury the geese and build a tower, which was named Yan Pagoda. Xuanzang built the Big Wild Goose Pagoda based on this allusion.
The Big Wild Goose Pagoda was originally a five story building due to insufficient financial resources. Later, due to Wu Zetians belief in Buddhism, it was built to ten stories. Unfortunately, during the wars of the Five Dynasties, the seven story Green Brick Pagoda was reduced to what it is today. The tower is 64.5 meters high, with one door opening on each floor. Its simple design and majestic momentum make it a rare masterpiece in Chinese Buddhist architectural art.
From a distance, you will notice that the Big Wild Goose Pagoda is slightly tilted, which has its origins. In the past, there have been several earthquakes in Xian that caused the tower to tilt slightly on one side. Later, the lower part of the tower was made of soil, and the uneven groundwater accelerated the settlement and tilt of the Big Wild Goose Pagoda. Now, the groundwater is gradually being recovered, making the Big Wild Goose Pagoda "turn from evil to good".
The Big Wild Goose Pagoda is one of the first batch of national key protected cultural relics. After multiple renovations, this seven story green brick pagoda has become sturdy and solid. In the future cultural relic protection and social construction, the Big Wild Goose Pagoda will not diminish its classical beauty and will be shrouded in a charming and mysterious veil! Attracting people to explore Buddhist culture and ancient Eastern civilization.
Before the Tang Dynasty in China, Mount Huangshan was called Yishan. Yishan was black in appearance, because there were many blue black rocks on the mountain. The ancients gave it this name. Legend has it that the ancestor of our Chinese nation, Xuanyuan Huangdi, came here to collect herbs and refine pills after completing the unification of the Central Plains and creating Chinese civilization. He bathed in hot springs and thus became a Taoist immortal.

Dear tourists:
Welcome everyone here, below I will introduce it to you! In northwest China, the beautiful city of Xian is a famous ancient capital of thirteen dynasties. There are iconic buildings such as the Bell Tower, the Ming Great Wall ruins, and the Huaqing Pool. But the most magnificent and famous is undoubtedly the Big Wild Goose Pagoda. The Big Wild Goose Pagoda has been built by Master Xuanzang since the Tang Dynasty to store Buddhist scriptures and pagodas. It is built inside the Dacien Temple and has been well preserved since ancient times. It is now available for tourists to visit and explore, and is a famous tourist attraction in China, as well as a symbol of the ancient city of Xian. The Big Wild Goose Pagoda is printed in the center of the emblem of Xian, indicating that it is undoubtedly the symbol of Xian.
The origin of the Wild Goose Pagoda is mysterious and mysterious. The Big Wild Goose Pagoda was originally a five story building due to insufficient financial resources, but later it was built to ten floors because Wu Zetian believed in Buddhism. Unfortunately, during the wars of the Five Dynasties, the seven story Green Brick Pagoda was reduced to what it is today. The tower is 64.5 meters high, with one doorway on each floor. Its simple and majestic design makes it a rare masterpiece in Chinese Buddhist architectural art.
In the future cultural relic protection and social construction, the Big Wild Goose Pagoda will not diminish its classical beauty and will be shrouded in this charming and mysterious veil! Attracting people to explore Buddhist culture and ancient Eastern civilization.
