排球運(yùn)動(dòng)：美國(guó)教授發(fā)明Volleyball

　　The sport originated in the United States, and is now just achieving the type of popularity in the U.S. that it has received on a global basis, where it ranks behind only soccer among participation sports.

　　Today there are more than 46 million Americans who play volleyball. There are 800 million players worldwide who play Volleyball at least once a week.

　　In 1895, William G. Morgan, an instructor at the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) in Holyoke, Mass., decided to blend elements of basketball, baseball, tennis, and handball to create a game for his classes of businessmen which would demand less physical contact than basketball. He created the game of Volleyball (at that time called mintonette). Morgan borrowed the net from tennis, and raised it 6 feet 6 inches above the floor, just above the average man’s head.

　　During a demonstration game, someone remarked to Morgan that the players seemed to be volleying the ball back and forth over the net, and perhaps "volleyball" would be a more deive name for the sport.

排球歷史

　　1892年在美國(guó)馬薩諸塞州，耐史密斯博士掛起了兩個(gè)籃筐從而發(fā)明了籃球，而摩根在觀察了他的朋友的新發(fā)明之后想，對(duì)于那些已過(guò)中年的商人來(lái)講籃球運(yùn)動(dòng)也許過(guò)于激烈了一些。因此，四年之后，摩根發(fā)明了自己的運(yùn)動(dòng)項(xiàng)目。又過(guò)了一個(gè)世紀(jì)，他的發(fā)明——排球同籃球一道成為了奧運(yùn)會(huì)上速度最快、對(duì)抗性最強(qiáng)的比賽項(xiàng)目之一。

　　摩根最初給他的發(fā)明起的名字是“mintonette”，當(dāng)?shù)氐囊晃唤淌诤芸鞂⑵涠�義為一種把球擊過(guò)球網(wǎng)的游戲，于是，它最初的名字也就發(fā)生了改變。
