實用詞匯 挑戰(zhàn)極限push the envelope

Envelope是信封，但是在push the envelope這個習慣用語里，envelope可不是信封的意思。它是個技術性的詞匯，指機械或其它設備的性能范圍，或者功用極限。比方說，如果一輛汽車的設計規(guī)格為最高時速180公里，但是你卻以190公里的時速駕駛這輛車，那么你就是在push the envelope，超越它的性能范圍了，或者是在玩命了。

　　我們來看一個把push the envelope應用在技術領域的例子，講的是飛行員試開新飛機:

　　Test pilots often have to put themselves into danger. Sometimes they have to push the envelope to see whether a newly designed plane really can meet the limits the designers planned. 試飛飛行員常不得不冒生命危險。有時候他們必須讓新設計的飛機挑戰(zhàn)極限，以便測試飛機是否真能達到設計人員所設定的安全極限。

　　在這里push the envelope意思是超越安全限度。

　　但是push the envelope這個習慣用語的應用范圍并不局限于機械工程。它也轉用到日常生活中，用來指人際關系的緊張化。來看下面這個例子：

　　He pushed the envelope when he hit his wife at the party after getting drunk. She asked for divorce the next day. 他喝醉并當眾毆打妻子的行為已經(jīng)超過了他太太的忍耐限度，所以太太第二天就提出要和他離婚。
