maintain與support，uphold，sustain，back都含“支持”、“支援”的意思，它們有何異同？

答：support 系常用詞, 指“支撐尤指從下面支撐”、“經(jīng)受支撐��；承受”, 如: ① Walls support the roof.墻壁支撐屋頂。② He’s a large family to support. 他要養(yǎng)一大家子人。

uphold 指“舉起；升起高高舉起；升起”，“反駁針對反對意見來堅(jiān)持或肯定”。如: The judge upheld the lower court’s decision. 法官維持下級法院的判決。

sustain 指“繼續(xù)生存；維持”,“支持，鼓舞支撐…的精神、生命力或決心；鼓勵”。如: ① The sea wall sustains the shock of the waves. 海堤能抵擋海浪的沖擊。② The facts sustained his theory.事實(shí)證實(shí)了他的理論。maintain 指“保持存在的狀態(tài)；堅(jiān)持或保持”,“保衛(wèi)或抵制批評或進(jìn)攻”。如: ① The car has always been properly maintained. 這汽車一直保養(yǎng)得很好。② He failed again and again simply because he had maintained his defeatist attitude.因?yàn)樗恢眻?jiān)持失敗主義的態(tài)度,所以失敗了一次又一次。
