I see two kinds of pressure working on college students today: economic pressure, parental pressure. It is easy to look around for rebels-- to blame the colleges for charging too much money, the parents for pushing their children too far. But there are no rebels, only victims.
The pressure is heavy on students who just want to graduate and get a job. If I were an employer I would rather employ graduates who have this range and curiosity than those who narrowly pursued safe subjects and high grades. I know incalculable students whose inquiring minds cheer me. I like to hear the play of their ideas. I don't know if they are getting A or C, and I don't care. I also like them as people. The country needs them, and they will find satisfying jobs. I tell them to relax. They can't.
Nor can I blame them. They live in a brutal economy.Today it is not unusual for a student, even if he works part time at college and full time during the summer, to increase to 5, 000 in loans after graduation. Encouraged at commencemerit to go forth into the world, he is already behind as he goes forth. How could he not feel under pressure throughout college to prepare for this day of reckoning?

But the sons and daughters want to major in history or classics or philosophy-- subjects with no "practical" value.Where's the payoff on the humanities? It's not easy to persuade such loving parents that the humanities do indeed pay off. The intellectual faculties developed by studying subjects like history and classics are just the faculties that make creative leaders in business or almost any general field.
Luckily for me, most of them got into their field by an indirect route, to their surprise, after many roundabout ways.The students are startled. They can hardly conceive of a career that was not preplanned. They can hardly imagine allowing the hand of God or chance to nudge them down some unforeseen trail.

一、使用詞典及注重閱讀
詞典是學習一門語言的工具，很多學生學英語沒有經(jīng)常查英語詞典的習慣，這是不良的學習習慣,應(yīng)該多多使用詞典。有的語言學家認為甚至看一個學生使用什么樣的詞典就可以判斷的的學習水平。我認為首選的應(yīng)該是經(jīng)濟實惠的英漢雙解詞典，如：《郎文英漢雙解活用詞典》(LONGMAN ACTIVE STUDY ENGLISH-CHINESE DICTIONARY)(上海譯文出版社，32元)，然后再過度到使用英英詞典。當然，查名詞通常需要借助漢英詞典。在查英語詞典的時候我們還應(yīng)該學習的是詞語的搭配。如：because of后只能接名詞詞組(做賓語)，because后只能接表示原因的從句。學習單詞時請記住英語單詞的詞性。如bribe可以是名詞，也可以作為動詞來使用。如：The bank teller bribed his banker.(銀行出納員賄賂他的上司) The banker was charged with taking bribes from the bank teller.(銀行經(jīng)理被指控接受出納員的賄賂)The government fights against the bribery(政府打擊行賄受賄)。學習詞的時候一般情況下不要孤立地學，否則容易忘記。盡量作到“詞不離句，句不離文。”有的學生寫作文的時候從英語詞典里找到他們需要的詞。這并不是明智的學習英語寫作的方法�；蛘吒鶕�(jù)自己的漢語思維將要表達的意思寫出來，寫出來的英語往往給人感覺非常蹩腳而不自然。前提是他在寫作文以前到?jīng)]有大量的閱讀中去吸取知識的養(yǎng)分，培養(yǎng)語感，就象蜜蜂不采蜜就釀不出蜜的道理一樣。
二、善用詞匯提高寫作水平
句子是由詞組合而成的。有的學生在寫英語作文的時候，喜歡用生僻的詞，認為這樣可以得到高分。我覺得這似乎有些“為賦新詩強說愁”的味道。如I deem(我想)，而不用I think.一位美國的心理學博士Lois Gail認為：deem通常不可以取代 think. 因為 deem 是英語中非常正式的說法，包含了判斷和權(quán)威。她用英語講解：In current English, “deem” is very formal and almost connotes judgment and authority.It is not commonly used as a substitute for “think.” 用什么樣的詞要分場合。如果是一個非常莊嚴肅穆的場合，可以用deem, 但如果表達個人對某一問題的看法，還是要用think合情理些。
有的學生寫作文的時候反復(fù)用一個詞組，會給人枯燥的感覺。如：Every morning, I get up early, then go to do some sports. Doing sports makes me healthy and smart.作文中的用法都是正確的，但更好的則是：Every morning, I get up early to play basketball or go some jogging, which makes me healthy and energetic. 中國學生在英語作文中喜歡用的一個英語表達法do some sports(從事體育運動)，是從中學英語課本學來的�？墒窃诂F(xiàn)代英語里，這個表達法幾乎沒有人使用了。如果從事體育運動，就具體表達成：play basketball, play football.等等。
三、善用句型提高寫作水平
寫作文首先是從寫正確的句子開始。一個句子從語法上講是指由大寫字母開始，由名詞，動詞或詞組構(gòu)成的一個陳述句，祈使句，驚嘆句和疑問句。由句號，疑問號或驚嘆號來結(jié)束。表示一個意思講完了，它表示停頓和呼吸。音樂的樂譜講“樂句，”一個樂句彈奏完了要停頓一下是一樣的道理。 要注意的是很多(包括美國)學生在寫英語作文的時候，不知道英語的句號要用在引號前面。正確的例句如：She said, “You are a good girl.”這一細節(jié)請注意。有的學生寫英語作文喜歡用復(fù)合句，認為這樣不容易出錯。其實，很多學生連簡單的英語句子都不能保證寫對的時候，就寫出來些錯誤的復(fù)合句。這就象一個小孩還沒有學會走路就開始學跑步，肯定是要跌跤的。我認識一位美國的高中英語教師，美國文學學士Temple Sterling 女士認為將英語作為外語來學習的學生還是先學會使用簡單句然后再學習復(fù)合句也不遲。
(一)盡量使用基本句型
英語句子結(jié)構(gòu)的特點是：相對于德語，法語，俄語，英語“比較簡單，自然，合乎邏輯思維的自然順序�！�(李賦寧《英語學習經(jīng)驗談》147頁)。要寫好英語作文首先要掌握基本的英語句型：英語千變?nèi)f化的句子歸根到底都離不開以下這五個基本的句型。(《大學英語》：語法與練習 第一冊第1頁)通常情況下，一個句子的關(guān)鍵在于動詞。有人提出的觀點是：動詞是一個句子的靈魂。
1. Mary is a nurse.SVC (主——動——主補)
2. The flowers are blooming. SV (主——動)
3. I have a pen. SVO(主——動——賓)
4. The mother will buy the girl a bike. SVOi (間接賓語)Od(直接賓語) (主——動——間賓——直賓)
5. The parents consider the child a genius. SVOCo (主——動——賓——賓補)
英語中的系表結(jié)構(gòu)也很常用。如：You look happy.look 與happy構(gòu)成系表結(jié)構(gòu)。
(二)活用英語連詞
英語里有些短語就象水泥一樣把整個段落的構(gòu)連架連接起來。如：表示結(jié)果：as a result, consequently, therefore, etc. in contrast, however, etc. 遞進：furthermore, in addition, etc. 總結(jié)：in a word, in brief, in short, etc. 轉(zhuǎn)折：but, in spite of, etc. 原因：because, because of, 讓步：though
(三)學會使用平行結(jié)構(gòu)
平行結(jié)構(gòu)相當于漢語里的排比結(jié)構(gòu)，它是英美人喜歡使用的一種語言結(jié)構(gòu)，即將相類似的詞或者動詞結(jié)構(gòu)放在一起，這樣不容易出錯，并且排列整齊，營造出一種氣勢。根據(jù)一個美國老師的觀點，如果一個中國人向英國或是美國的公司用寫英語求職信，會使用平行結(jié)構(gòu)的人將會被優(yōu)先錄用。
平行結(jié)構(gòu)例句1，Mary is a kind, cute, clever, happy girl.
例2，Every morning, after I get up, I get dressed, make bed,brush my teeth, wash my face, have breakfast and go to school.(有下劃線部分為平行結(jié)構(gòu)。)
(四)運用語氣加強情感
英語里有一些縮寫，如I#39;m , he#39;s , she#39;s, I#39;ve, I don#39;t 等等，you#39;re 的讀音與your 相同。所有的這些縮寫形式都是英語里不正式的用法和語氣。在正式語體中，如果給美國總統(tǒng)寫信，就不可以用縮寫形式，而必須要用 I am, You are, He is 等等。用He is hard-working 比he works hard.語氣弱。(be 結(jié)構(gòu)比動詞的.氣弱要弱。)long for語氣很強，一般只能在戀人之間使用。如英語一首情歌歌詞：I am longing for you.
四、段落層次分明
一個典型的英語段落往往先點明主題思想，即(topic sentence)，然后再對該主題加以分析，論證，即(support)，最后是一個總結(jié)性的句子，即(conclusion)。(姚君偉《跨文化語境下的外語教學》188頁)
例：(主題句：)Competition is common in every field of life.(展開部分：)(1：) For example, the Olympic Games is the most famous competition in the world. (2：)In the four hundred meter swimming race, the swimmers plunge into the water at the signal.( 3：)Each swings his or her arms and legs and tries his or her best to be the first. (4：)Also there is the competition for jobs, for promotion, for customers, and so on. (總結(jié)：)We can say ,in a certain sense, competition stimulating people#39;s interest in work helps society to go forward.

五、運用口語培養(yǎng)英語思維
提高英語的作文可以從訓練英語口語開始，口語是文字的先鋒�！翱陬^語言早在人類社會形成之初就已出現(xiàn)，至盡已經(jīng)存在了幾百萬年，而書面文字的歷史只有短短幾千年。”(胡壯麟《語言學簡明教程》133頁)英國著名的英語教學專家格蘭特在20xx年3月20日的英語《二十一世紀報》增刊上談到口語的提高可以促進英語作文水平。他在文中指出：“Oral skills are important both in themselves, and also because they help one to prepare for writing. The best oral activities often lead to written activities that benefit from them.” 還應(yīng)該多與英美人交流，在實際的生活中了解他們的語言習慣與思維習慣，還可以學到書本上學不到的知識。
思維是寫作的前提條件。著名語言學家王力先生曾說“中國的語言是人制的，西洋的語言是法制的。”所以他們的語言邏輯性強，人情味淡;我們的語言邏輯性差，人情味強。如：1)我的祖母還健在。英語：My grandma is still alive(我的祖母還活著).我想只有通過大量的閱讀才能培養(yǎng)良好的英語的思維和語感，克服來自母語的干擾。話題又回到閱讀上來，讀多了就自然培養(yǎng)英語思維，就可以不再受母語思維的干擾�！坝⒄Z思維在寫作中的好處是可以用英美人習慣的言語來表達思想�！�
